KUCHING, May 6: The passing of the former Sarawak Governor, the late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, is a great loss to Sarawak and Malaysia in general.
Current Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said this in his speech during the First Session of the Third Term of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.
Wan Junaidi extended his condolences to the late Taib’s family. Taib passed away on Feb 21 this year.
“The late Taib was an outstanding leader who had been responsible for the modernisation of Sarawak. His contributions were invaluable, especially during his 33 years as Sarawak Chief Minister and 10 years as the Sarawak Governor.
“The late Taib’s leadership has succeeded in changing the economic status and standard of living of the people of Sarawak. Sarawak is now a progressive province with an economy based on high-tech industries and equipped with various modern infrastructures.
“Indeed, the passing of the deceased is a great loss to Sarawak, and also to Malaysia in general. The deceased’s contribution will always be remembered. I believe that the deceased’s legacy of development will be continued by the leadership of the Sarawak Government,” he said.
At the same time, Wan Junaidi expressed gratitude to the former 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who led Malaysia to successfully weather the bitter challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and resolve the political crisis that formed the basis for the establishment of the Unity Government for the sake of national stability.
“His Majesty is a people-oriented leader, fair and concerned about the needs of the people at various levels. This is evident through the Kembara Kenali Borneo programme where His Majesty and the Queen together with their children toured Sarawak and Sabah from September 3 to 13, 2023,” he added.
In the same speech, Wan Junaidi also extended his congratulations to Sultan Ibrahim on his appointment as the 17th Agong as well as Datuk Mutang Tagal as the 8th Dewan Negara president. — DayakDaily
