KUCHING, Feb 16: The Chinese community in Sarawak has long been recognised as a key pillar of the State’s economic and business development, contributing across trade, agriculture, small and medium enterprises, modern industries and investment sectors.
Sarawak Head of State (TYT) Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar in his Chinese New Year message highlighted the community’s pivotal role in driving economic development and entrepreneurship.
“The Chinese community has been instrumental in advancing Sarawak’s economy, supporting not only family businesses but also the growth of the wider state economy,” he said.
The State government continues to support this contribution through targeted initiatives, including education funding and business development programmes.
“In 2024, Sarawak allocated RM22 million to Chinese schools, with RM12 million for primary schools and RM10 million for secondary schools to nurture future talent.
“The recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) for local university entry further enhances opportunities for students to contribute to strategic sectors including technology and aerospace,” he added.
Beyond education, the government provides welfare and development support such as monthly financial assistance for low-income households and funding for infrastructure upgrades at Chinese temples and community centres. These initiatives aim to strengthen social stability while enabling the community to continue fuelling economic growth.
Wan Junaidi also praised the community’s involvement in entrepreneurship and trade, noting that collaboration between businesses and the government is essential to sustaining Sarawak’s economic momentum and ensuring inclusive prosperity for all, particularly the B40 and M40 groups.
“As Sarawak celebrates the Year of the Horse, the Chinese community’s resilience, innovation and business acumen remain a driving force behind the state’s ambition to become a progressive and prosperous region by 2030,” he said. — DayakDaily
