Two Sibu locals succumb to Covid-19, third consecutive day of double fatalities

KUCHING, Jan 25: For the third consecutive day, Covid-19 has claimed the lives of two Sibu residents.

According to a statement by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), there is now a total of seven Covid-19 deaths in Sibu.

Similar as to earlier cases, the two fatalities today, Cases 2,855 and 2,672, had co-morbid conditions including high blood pressure, obesity, chronic lung disease and chronic kidney disease.

Fatality number 29 passed away at 1.51am today at the age of 72, while the state’s 30th Covid-19 fatality was a Sarawakian male aged 52 who passed at 8.14am, also today.

Meanwhile, 17 districts in the state seeing increases in positive cases was led by Sibu with 52 new cases, Subis (11), Miri (10), Dalat (9), Bintulu (9), Kanowit (6), Samarahan (5), Julau (5), Song (3), Kuching (2), Kapit (2), Sarikei (1), Pakan (1), Selangau (1), Lubok Antu (1), Telang Usan (1) and Serian (1).

Remaining on top of the list, Sibu recorded 27 cases from the Pasai Cluster while 17 cases were tested in Sibu health centres, five cases were detected from active contact detection (ACD) and another three involved Sibu health officers.

In Bintulu, five cases were attributed to the Rakut Cluster, three were found positive after tests at health centres and one was a symptomatic case.

With regards to 29 other cases related to the Pasai Cluster in Sibu, 11 cases were found in Subis, Dalat (9), Kanowit (5), Song (3) and Sarikei (1).

For the Rakut Cluster in Miri, five new cases were reported in Julau and one in Telang Usan today. The Stutong Cluster in Kuching recorded one case in Samarahan.

Moving on to Kuching, one case involved an individual who was confirmed positive via ACD while the second was detected via screening after returning from Selangor.

The sole case in Pakan, on the other hand, was found to be Covid-19 positive after a pre-surgery swab test.

Concerning symptomatic cases other than in Bintulu, there were 12 cases in total, scattered across Miri (4), Samarahan (4), Kapit (2), Kanowit (1) and Selangau (1).

From these 12, one was an import case from other districts while the remaining 11 were local transmission cases.

Six more new cases reported today in Miri, one in Serian and one in Lubok Antu were close contacts of Covid-19 patients.

With 120 new Covid-19 cases in total reported today, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Sarawak now stands at 3,499.

SDMC, in its daily Covid-19 statement, also reported 116 new recoveries who have been discharged from Sibu Hospital (74), Miri Hospital (28), Sarawak General Hospital (8) and Bintulu Hospital (6).

In the meantime, 1,816 patients are still receiving treatment in various hospitals across the state.

There are 136 new Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) cases and 73 people awaiting laboratory test results.

There are also 508 Persons-Under-Surveillance (PUS) who have been registered into various hotels across Sarawak for quarantine, and a total of 5,063 individuals under quarantine in 73 hotels throughout Sarawak. So far, 56,572 PUS have completed their 14-day quarantine. — DayakDaily
