KUCHING, Jan 11: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak must secure more seats in the upcoming Sarawak election to strengthen its voice in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS).

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong Wui Wui said the party’s current representation is insufficient to effectively check the ruling coalition and speak up for the people.

“Two seats are not enough. My voice alone in the DUS is not enough.

“There are 82 seats in total, where Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) currently holds 80 and DAP only has two,” she said when speaking at the reopening of the refurbished DAP Sarawak headquarters today.

She also criticised other opposition parties that had joined the ruling coalition, saying DAP Sarawak remains the only opposition party that continues to stand firmly on principle.

“That is why we need DAP Sarawak to continue fighting for the people and to speak louder in the DUS.

“That is also why, in the coming Sarawak election, we need to win more seats,” she added.

Yong further said the next Sarawak election could be held at any time this year, urging DAP members to be fully prepared.

“The next Sarawak election is not so far away — it can be held any time this year.

“As soon as the Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg says October or November, anytime — we must get ourselves prepared,” she stressed. — DayakDaily
