KUCHING, Dec 2: The Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (SALCRA) is developing two additional Cattle Breeding and Fattening Centres in Bau and Betong, with a combined capacity of 500 heads, expected to be completed in 2026.

Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom said SALCRA will continue to strengthen the cattle industry, with 3,700 heads of cattle currently raised within its oil palm estates.

“These centres will serve as key platforms to boost local breeder stock and improve calving rates, thereby enhancing the resilience of our ruminant industry,” he said during the ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

The ministry will continue to work closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Malaysia to boost beef production in Sarawak, he added.

“In 2025, a sum of RM13.37 million was approved under Program Pengukuhan Keterjaminan Makanan for the acquisition of 1,101 heads of quality Brahman breeder stocks, which have already arrived on October 18, 2025,” he said

He further said the ministry has taken a few work visits to advanced agricultural countries, namely Brazil and New Zealand.

These visits have provided valuable insights into effective breeding, feeding and herd management approaches suitable for adaptation to Sarawak’s conditions.

“The knowledge gained will enhance strategic planning, improve operational efficiency, and support the development of a more competitive and sustainable beef industry in Sarawak,” Dr Rundi concluded. — DayakDaily
