Two new longhouse clusters in Pakan, Kanowit register 56 cases

KUCHING, May 23: A longhouse in Merampu, Bukit Temedak in Pakan is at the centre of a new community cluster with 30 Covid-19 cases confirmed so far.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily Covid-19 update said 17 new cases were reported in this cluster today.


“A total of 88 individuals linked to this cluster have been screened whereby 30 people tested positive for Covid-19 including the index case, 48 tested negative and 10 are still awaiting laboratory results,” the committee said.

All positive cases from the cluster were referred to Sarikei Hospital and admitted to Sarikei Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) for isolation and further treatment.

The Bukit Temedak Cluster is the only active cluster recorded in Pakan District so far.

Meanwhile, the new Sungai Majau Cluster in Kanowit reported a total of 26 positive cases involving residents to a longhouse located at Nanga Setapang in Bukit Majau.

“Initially, a total of 51 individuals were screened after being identified as close contacts. Of these, 26 people tested positive for Covid-19 including the index case, 24 negative and one is awaiting laboratory results,” SDMC said.

All positive cases from the cluster were referred to Kanowit Hospital and admitted to Sibu and Kanowit Low-Risk Treatment Centres (PKRCs) for isolation and further treatment.

With the addition of the Sungai Majau Cluster, there are now four active clusters in Kanowit District. The other clusters are Sungai Ngungun Cluster, Sungai Tuah Cluster and Sungai Ranan Cluster.

At present, there are 84 active clusters Statewide with eight of them recording an increase of 83 new positive cases. — DayakDaily
