KUCHING, Jan 19: The Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) has achieved a significant milestone in its mission of Bible translation and distribution with the official launch and dedication of Alkitab Kudus Malaysia and Alkitab Berita Baik Edisi Studi, held today at the Sanctuary of Trinity Methodist Church, Jalan Ellis.
The event was a momentous occasion, celebrating BSM’s 40-year commitment to making the Scriptures more accessible to Bahasa Malaysia-speaking communities.
The ceremony was graced by distinguished religious leaders, including Association of Churches Sarawak (ACS) chairman Bishop Datuk Danald Jute and BSM president Bishop Datuk Ng Moon Hing, who both underscored the profound significance of these Bible translations.
In his address, Danald expressed deep gratitude to the Bible Society for its dedication to Bible translation, emphasising the inclusivity of the Word of God in all languages.
“The beautiful thing with Bible translation is that it reminds us that our God understands all of our languages. Every language is a sacred language, a holy language that can be used in heaven and worship here on earth,” he stated.
He further highlighted that Alkitab Kudus Malaysia is more than just a translation; it is a testament to faith and unity among Malaysian Christians.
“As Malaysians, we have every right to use our language in our faith and worship. The launching of these Bibles today is not merely about distributing books—it is about strengthening and affirming our faith together as the body of Christ and the people of God.”
He encouraged attendees to embrace and share the newly launched Scriptures, emphasising the need to preserve and celebrate Malaysia’s linguistic and spiritual heritage.
Meanwhile, Ng reflected on the arduous journey of Bible translation and the commitment required to bring these sacred texts to fruition.
“Translating the Bible is a laborious process, taking decades of meticulous work. Translators must first immerse themselves in the language and culture before constructing meaningful translations.
“Traditionally, it took about 20 years to complete a Bible translation, but today, technology has reduced the process to around seven years. Still, it requires immense effort and dedication,” he explained.
He underscored the unparalleled value of the Bible, reminding the congregation of its spiritual and historical importance.
“The Bible is not just a book—it is the truth of God, the light of God, and the sword of God. It is a treasure beyond measure, requiring a dedicated workforce and resources to ensure its accuracy and preservation.”
The Alkitab Kudus Malaysia, developed over 13 years, is a formal translation of the Bible that adheres closely to the original texts, making it ideal for scholarly research, study, and preaching.
Meanwhile, the Alkitab Berita Baik Edisi Studi, which has been in preparation for 20 years, serves as a comprehensive study Bible designed to equip Bahasa Malaysia-speaking believers with enriched scriptural understanding.
Also present were ACS secretary general Elder Ambrose Linang, BSM general secretary Rev Mathew K Punnoose, Rev Dr Daud Soesilo, and Borneo Evangelical Mission (BEM) Sarawak president Rev Bina Agong. — DayakDaily
