Two missing after fishing boat capsizes off Tanjung Payung, Niah

KUCHING, Nov 7: Two local fishermen remain missing after their fishing vessel capsized in the waters off Tanjung Payung, Niah on Tuesday (Nov 5) night.

Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the police received a report from Samalaju Police Station, Bintulu at about 8.46pm regarding the incident.

Four foreign crew members, aged between 20 to 47 were rescued by a passing tugboat near the area.

“However, two local fishermen, including the boat skipper and crew member aged between 33 and 65 have yet to be found,” read the statement.

Following the report, a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched involving the police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), and Civil Defence Force (APM).

As of today, the missing victims have not yet been located. The SAR operation entered its second day with the participation of 90 personnel and three boats from multiple agencies.
