KUCHING, Mar 11: More than two million registered vehicles in Sarawak are placing increasing pressure on urban road networks, highlighting the need for better coordinated traffic management.
Minister of Transport Sarawak (MOTS) Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said statistics as of the end of 2025 showed the state had surpassed two million registered vehicles, the majority of which are private cars and motorcycles.
“According to statistics, as of the end of 2025, Sarawak has more than two million registered vehicles.
“The steady increase in private vehicle ownership continues to place significant pressure on urban road networks,” he said in a statement recently.
With the rising number of vehicles, Lee said traffic congestion during peak hours has become more noticeable along major routes and intersections across urban areas.
He added that the situation underscores the need for effective and coordinated traffic management to address issues such as road capacity, congestion mitigation, parking management and the use of smart traffic light systems.
At the same time, Lee noted that major infrastructure projects such as the Kuching Urban Transportation System are important for long-term improvements to the transport system, although construction may temporarily affect traffic flow.
In line with efforts to improve traffic management, he revealed that the Standards and Guidelines for Sarawak Smart Traffic Light Systems were issued in February this year with technical input from the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA).
Lee emphasised that improving urban traffic management requires close collaboration among government agencies, local authorities and other stakeholders. — DayakDaily
