KUCHING, Jan 16: Two men, aged 42 and 38, have been ordered to remain in police custody to facilitate investigations into an alleged drug trafficking operation.
The remand extension was granted by Subordinate Court Assistant Registrar Salina Sahrom following a police application, with the new remand period set to expire on Jan 23.
The application was filed by investigating officer Insp Scully Natalie Syed, while the suspects were represented by lawyers Patrick Voon and Amarprit Singh.
The pair were initially remanded from Jan 9 to 16 under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which pertains to drug trafficking offences.
Their arrests followed a police raid on an apartment unit in the city on Jan 8, during which officers seized narcotics and properties valued at nearly RM1 million.
Authorities reportedly uncovered 5.6kg of methamphetamine, 1.8kg of ketamine, 560.2g of ecstasy and 120g of Erimin 5 pills, with the drugs estimated to be worth RM328,173.50.
Police also seized three multipurpose vehicles, a car, a motorcycle and a luxury wristwatch valued at approximately RM604,000.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the older suspect allegedly managed the premises, while the younger man was believed to be responsible for transporting the drugs. Both reportedly tested positive for drug use following their arrests. — DayakDaily
