KUCHING, Oct 3: Police have arrested two foreign men and seized methamphetamine worth RM34,513.60 during a series of raids in Lundu, Sarawak.
Lundu District Police Chief Supt Sudirman Kram said Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) officers, together with Lundu district police, carried out three separate raids between 6.30pm on Oct 2 and 12.30am on Oct 3 following intelligence gathering.
In the first operation, a 33-year-old foreign man was arrested behind a hotel in Lundu town, where police found 7 grams of methamphetamine worth RM770. He later led investigators to a hotel room, where they uncovered another 304 grams of the drug, valued at RM33,448.80.
In a separate raid at a house in Kampung Stungkor, Lundu, police detained a second suspect, a 36-year-old foreign man, and confiscated 2.68 grams of methamphetamine worth RM294.80.
“In total, authorities seized 313.76 grams of methamphetamine, an amount police said could potentially harm 1,568 users,” he said in a statement today.
Both suspects tested negative for drugs during initial urine screenings. However, police revealed that neither had valid travel documents and neither had prior criminal records.
The first suspect is being investigated under Section 39B and Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carry penalties ranging from the death sentence or life imprisonment with whipping, to prison terms of between two and five years plus caning.
The second suspect faces charges under Section 12(3) of the same Act, punishable by a fine of up to RM100,000, a maximum five-year jail term, or both.
Both men are currently remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code until October 11 to assist investigations.
Sudirman said authorities are actively hunting down the remaining members of the syndicate.
He stressed that the Royal Malaysia Police will not compromise with any party involved in drug trafficking, reminding the public that drugs remain the nation’s number one enemy. – DayakDaily
