SIMANGGANG, Aug 23: Two bus drivers were sentenced to a fine of RM8,000 each for giving a bribe of RM1,100 to a team of Immigration Department officers in the Sessions Court today.

Peter Whan Jiew Luk, 54, and Robert Dana Apang, 45, pleaded guilty to the alternative charge framed under Section 214 of the Penal Code.

Sessions Court Judge Steve Ritikos sentenced each of them to a fine of RM8,000 or in default of six months’ imprisonment.

According to the charge sheet, on Feb 16, 2021, at about 3.10am, a team of Immigration Department officers were doing a check on a bus at 0.75 metre away from Petronas RNR Layer, Betong.

During the check, both accused were in the same bus and were suspected to have committed a crime under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.

Both accused then offered a bribe with a total cash of RM1,100 to the team of Immigration Department officers as an inducement to alleviate their offence.

They were charged under Section 214 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment of ten years or with fine or with both, upon conviction.
