KUCHING, Dec 10: Chief political secretary to Sarawak Premier Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman criticises an online analysis which attempts to compare Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) to the performance of Sarawak Cable Bhd (Sarawak Cable).
In a recent Facebook post, Fazzruddin, who is also Tupong assemblyman, said that the analysis oversimplifies the comparison between PETROS and Sarawak Cable, and unfairly diminishes Sarawak’s capabilities
“It sounded so professional when its includes an ‘analyst estimation’. Nang bagei x pande papa lah urang Sarawak tok di mata penulis dan analyst ya (as if Sarawak is incompetent in the eyes of the writer and analyst),” he wrote, referring to the article title ‘Loss-making Sarawak Cable is a warning to Sarawak Premier and can PETROS survive on its own?’ published on December 8.
Fazzrudin stressed that the comparison was misleading, highlighting PETROS’ strong performance since its establishment.
“PETROS has grown to become the third largest oil & gas producer in Malaysia. This goes to show that State-level control over resources is not just symbolic. The firm has substantial scale and contribution,” he highlighted.
He also pointed out that PETROS is spearheading the development Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, a state of the art low-carbon industrial park, while also expanding into carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS).
“The fact that global community notices Sarawak Green Economy shift lead by Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) and PETROS is one of the important component, sends signal that the strategy under the current leadership is gaining external trust,” he added.
Fazzrudin further outlined progress on the Miri Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) project, saying Stage 1 earthworks have been completed by a local company while Stage 2 is underway, with PETROS working alongside international partners to implement the project.
He said the remaining project scope will be carried out by local companies, and once operational, the facility’s workforce is expected to be entirely local.
He highlighted this is what PETROS and Sarawakians are capable of. He added that constructive criticism is welcome but should be paired with proper recognition of local talent.
“A good critique can coexist with recognition. It is not that these Sarawakians are incapable. There are also many Sarawakian professionals who excel in PETROS,” he said.
“Under Abang Johari’s leadership since 2017, we have achieved various developments, successes and world recognition.” – DayakDaily
