KUCHING, Jan 20: A trust fund should be established to empower the Malay community in preserving their heritage assets, particularly those sold under faraid (Islamic inheritance laws), says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He explained that under Islamic law, land or property must be divided among heirs. If the property is valuable, it is often sold to distribute the proceeds, which can result in the loss of such assets, especially in urban areas.

“However, Malays often lack the financial capacity to purchase these inherited properties, which leads to their assets being sold to others.

“Thus, a trust fund can serve as a solution, enabling the community to buy faraid properties at market value,” he told reporters after launching the book Adat Resam Masyarakat Melayu Sarawak Berteraskan Syariah Islam at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) today.

Citing the example of Arif Hotel in Satok, Abang Johari highlighted that the family of the original owner had to sell the property due to faraid requirements.

“We are fortunate that Permodalan Satok Berhad, a trust fund, had the resources to purchase the hotel.

“This prevented it from falling into the hands of outsiders and ensured it remains under local Malay management. This approach safeguards our community assets,” he said.

He added that Malays can collaborate with non-Malays by participating as equity partners in property ownership.

“Do not sell 100 percent of your assets. Instead, take equity stakes as partners to retain ownership and rights to the property,” he advised.

Abang Johari also stressed the importance of financial empowerment through trust funds to prevent the erosion of heritage assets and preserve Malay villages in urban areas, citing examples such as Kampung Wireless in Miri and Kampung Nyabor in Sibu. – DayakDaily
