KUCHING, 11 Jan: United States President Donald Trump’s confrontational approach to international affairs could push the world towards a third world war, political pundit Dato Peter Minos has warned.

In a recent statement, he said Trump has threatened countries including Venezuela, Iran, Canada, Mexico, and Denmark, while his focus has also extended to Russia and China. Observers, he said, are left uncertain about his intentions.

The pundit said Trump’s policies are influenced by domestic pressures, including the United States’ national debt of about US$38 trillion and annual interest payments of roughly US$1 trillion.

He described the economic situation as “truly killing and dangerous to the US economy,” adding that spending on more than 700 overseas military bases and covert operations has worsened the problem.

Minos said China is at the centre of Trump’s strategic focus, with Washington containing Beijing through military bases across Asia and naval control of the South China Sea.

He also highlighted the rise of the BRICS bloc, led by China, which is now larger than the G7 and represents a significant economic challenge to the United States.

On Ukraine, Minos criticised the United States’ involvement, saying attempts to weaken Russia through military and financial support for Kyiv have failed, leaving the country devastated.

Minos warned that continued pressure on nuclear-armed powers could provoke defensive reactions that escalate into a wider conflict.

“The big nations like China and Russia will react and will defend themselves and will fight it out, if necessary, by nuclear weapons. That will end up in WW3. That will end our world,” he said. — DayakDaily
