MIRI, June 28: Minister of Transport Sarawak Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin wants the Federal government to expedite the allocation approval for Miri Airport’s extension plan to cater to the growing numbers of passengers there.
“We had submitted the extension plan to extend the existing Miri Airport to the Federal government two years ago, and unfortunately, a recent check showed that none (of the plans) were approved yet,” Lee said on Wednesday.
Lee disclosed that he would meet up with Federal Minister for Transport Anthony Loke to discuss the matter this Friday (June 30).
The extension cost is estimated to be around RM60 million and includes the construction of two additional aerobridges at Bay 2.
“I hopes the Federal government give this project priority,” he added.
Based on statistics, Lee said, in 2022, a total of 1.7 million passengers were recorded at Miri Airport.
While in 2023, up to April this year, Miri Airport recorded 695,086 passengers.
“We project that we will be having 2.78 million passengers in Miri Airport this year,” Lee told local media after chairing a meeting with the management of Miri Airport. — DayakDaily
