Transactions on Sarawak Pay surpassed RM1 billion mark with half million users

KUCHING, March 4: The total payments transacted on Sarawak’s very own electronic wallet— Sarawak Pay has surpassed the RM1 billion mark as of yesterday (March 3).

This was revealed by SiliconNet Technologies Sdn Bhd (SNT) chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain during the launching of UnionPay Virtual Card via Sarawak Pay latest version 2.5.0 today.


The cashless mobile payment solution which was launched in November, 2017, he said has grown from 50,000 users to its tenfold of 500,000 users over the span of three years.

“To date, close to 70,000 businesses in Sarawak have registered for their Sarawak Pay merchant accounts to receive cashless payments from their customers,” he added.

The latest version which has been made available for download starting today enables users to make overseas payments wherever the UnionPay QR code is accepted.

Sarawak Pay users can now conveniently pay by scanning UnionPay QR code in Malaysia and at over 30 million merchants in 45 markets including destinations popular with Sarawakians such as Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Turkey, UAE, United Kingdom and USA among others.

With this, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg who officiated the launch mentioned on renaming Sarawak Pay to SPay Global and to consider getting approvals from Bank Negara for a bigger e-Wallet size.

With this regards, to ensure that this upgrade is compliant with Bank Negara requirements, Abdul Aziz assured that SNT have gone through extended measures to realise this.

“We went through stringent enhancements to ensure that Sarawak Pay’s offering of UnionPay Virtual Card to our users meets and fulfills Bank Negara compliance requirements, and that include the addition of eKYC (electronically Know Your Customer) to the card application process,” he explained during his opening remarks at the launching ceremony streamed ‘live’ through Facebook today.

Those present physically and virtually at the ceremony were UnionPay International chairman and China UnionPay president Cai Jianbo, Sains chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, Deputy State Secretary Datu Dr Sabaraiah Putit, State Economic Planning Unit director Dr Muhammad Abdullah Haji Zaidel and SiliconNet Technologies Sdn Bhd managing director Dr Anderson Tiong. —DayakDaily
