Tragic ending to hunting trip

KOTA SAMARAHAN, Aug 15: A 45-year-old fisherman accidentally killed himself with a homemade gun while hunting at Batu Belat, Sungai Muara Tuang.

The incident occurred around midnight on Aug 13.

According to Kota Samarahan District police chief DSP Lee Chong Chern, the deceased, identified as Patrick Henry from Kampung Temedak 10, Kota Sentosa, and a relative Kennedy Kolong, 57, went for a hunting trip at 1.30pm.

At that time, Kennedy who was not carrying a firearm decided to stay on the boat, while Patrick who was carrying a homemade gun went into the jungle to hunt.

It is believed that Patrick failed to find any animals to hunt. As it was getting dark, he decided to climb a tree and use it as a hunting perch.

Kennedy later told police that around midnight, he heard a shot coming from Patrick’s direction, prompting him to step ashore to check.

He found Patrick on the ground with a shot wound under his chin.

Lee, who confirmed the case said initial investigations revealed that Patrick had accidentally shot himself, and he is believed to have died at the scene and there was no foul play involved.

Police have classified the case as sudden death.

They have also seized the homemade shotgun and a row of GB Club 12 bullets which they will dispose of under Section 53 of the Arms Act 1960. — DayakDaily
