KUCHING, Nov 28: Tourist arrivals to Sarawak are expected to remain strong despite the ongoing rainy season, with any impact likely to be minimal, says Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said Sarawak is well-prepared for any weather-related disruptions as disaster response teams remain on standby throughout the monsoon period.
“In the event that the weather gets so bad, we are always very prepared.
“Sarawak has its disaster team, and if there is a flood, landslide or big fire, they will be there to provide immediate assistance to anyone affected,” he told a press conference at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Complex here today.
Abdul Karim noted that rain has never been a deterrent to visitors and, in fact, forms part of Sarawak’s natural charm.
“Having the rain is just part of the attraction. If there is no rain, it won’t be good also,” he added.
He said Sarawak’s year-end calendar remains packed with major events, including Indonesian singer Andmesh Kamaleng’s solo concert tonight (Nov 28), the Search and XPDC rock concert next month, and the New Year’s Eve countdown celebration.
Event organisers, he added, have taken weather uncertainties into account when planning.
“If the event is held in an enclosed area, we don’t have to worry.
“But if it’s an open area like our countdown, we take into cognition all contingencies,” he said, noting that organisers also consult the Meteorological Department for forecasts.
Despite the wet conditions, Abdul Karim remains confident that Sarawak’s festive atmosphere and entertainment offerings will continue to draw crowds. – DayakDaily
