KUCHING, Feb 11: Issues such as high prices, limited food choices, steep rental costs, and operational constraints at airports, where a tourist’s experience begins, must be addressed with transparency.

Highlighting this in a post shared on his social media, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing stressed that an airport is not merely a commercial space but the nation’s main gateway, reflecting Malaysia’s values and hospitality.

“When tourists feel that food and goods at the airport are too expensive, that perception sticks and it is something we cannot take lightly,” he said after officiating the launch of the ShopLAH campaign at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 on Tuesday (Feb 10).

Tiong said he had personally heard complaints from both tourists and locals and called on all relevant parties, including airport management and outlet operators, to discuss joint solutions.

“We need to focus on volume, more reasonable pricing, and a more user-friendly experience,” he added.

Tiong also highlighted the need for Malaysia to be prepared in terms of airport capacity, facilities, and flight connections, noting the growing interest from international airlines.

“Our commitment is clear and these issues must be translated into action for tourists, for our people, and for Malaysia’s image in the eyes of the world,” he said.
