KUCHING, Dec 19: Although observing fire safety is crucial throughout the year, the extra distractions during festive seasons make it even more important to stay vigilant.
With only six days to go before Christmas, many Christians in the state would have begun their journey home to their respective villages or longhouses.
To remind these folks of fire safety and the dangers of fire, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel have been making their rounds across the state.
Today, for instance, three firefighters from Limbang fire station visited Rumah Baru Lubai and Rumah Intai to brief the headmen and villagers on emergency measures and to give advice on fire hazards, especially during the Christmas season, where longhouses will once again be packed and busy.
The firefighters also examined fire hydrants and extinguishers in these two settlements.
State Bomba director Khirudin Drahman said apart from patrolling hot spots in major towns, his men would pop in anytime and anywhere in the rural areas.
He urged the people to take extra precautions, saying that Christmas brings festive cheer with family and friends.
However, fairy lights, candles and decorations mean it is also a time to take extra care of one’s house to keep loved ones safe from fire.
“We often identify an increase in accidental dwelling fires during this period. So, to ensure you have a merry Christmas, keep fire safety at the top of your list. Make sure you place candles in suitable holders and away from curtains. Never leave your cooking unattended and, of course, do not overload your electrical sockets,” Khirudin emphasised. — DayakDaily
