KUCHING, April 13: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is urging the Ministry of Health (MoH) to provide additional medical staff and personal protective equipment (PPE) to deal with the rising cases of Covid-19 in Bintulu district.

Tiong in a press statement yesterday said the district was facing an acute shortage of specialists, medical officers, and nurses at this critical time.

At the same time, he said Bintulu Hospital is also in need of various medical equipment and upgrades to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.

“I have made an official request to the office of the Minister of Health Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba to request an urgent increase in medical staff and equipment to address the shortages in Bintulu.

“The sudden spike in cases has placed a heavy demand on our medical system.

“As the number of confirmed cases in Bintulu continues to increase, medical personnel have become overwhelmed and there is a shortage of equipment.

“Therefore, the quantity of frontline personnel, and keeping medical equipment in supply is critical to improve the pandemic situation.

“I urge the Ministry of Health to take this issue seriously and exercise greater precaution by arranging for more personnel on standby to support the hospital. This must be done to ensure the people can receive the best care and treatment possible and protect the health and safety of Bintulu,” he said.

Tiong observed that Bintulu Hospital had also taken in patients from the neighbouring districts during the battle of Covid-19 last year.

Thus, he believed that proper resource management is extremely important to avoid a collapse of the medical system in Bintulu.

At the same time, Tiong, who is also the Proggressive Democratic Party (PDP) president, called upon the public to cooperate by complying with the Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures (SOPs). — DayakDaily
