KUCHING, Feb 6: Dato Sri Tiong King Sing says he will continue to monitor the flood situation in Bintulu and has affirmed his commitment to fulfilling his duties by working closely with the Federal Government so they are fully informed of the disaster’s true severity and can respond effectively.
“At this time, the Federal Government is awaiting more detailed statistics on the flood, including the affected areas, the number of victims, and the extent of the losses.
“This data will enable the government to provide more targeted assistance. Therefore, I urge all flood victims to register with the relevant authorities as soon as possible to expedite the compilation of this data.
“In this regard, I will also carry out my duties and responsibilities by coordinating closely with the Federal Government to ensure that the Cabinet fully understands the true extent of the disaster that has struck.
“I hope this will lead to an expansion of aid coverage so that more victims receive government assistance,” the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, and Bintulu MP said in a post on his Facebook page.
Despite not being able to be physically present in Bintulu at all times, Tiong said he would continue to monitor the flood situation in Bintulu from time to time and organise follow-up post-disaster recovery measures.
As for now, recognising that there may be some shortcomings in the assistance provided by volunteer teams, Tiong has expressed his openness to receiving complaints and feedback.
This will help identify and address any weaknesses or gaps in the support being offered.
In addition, he said, if any affected households require cleaning assistance, they can directly contact his Special Officer, Steven Kong Kai Seng, at 012-8049663.
Tiong also pointed out that the Federal Government is actively seeking additional ways to provide assistance to the flood victims.
“This includes gathering government-linked companies (GLCs), such as Petronas, to contribute to the relief efforts, ensuring that those affected can recover and return to normal life as soon as possible,” he said.
“It is indeed very regrettable that the Chinese New Year celebrations were disrupted due to this terrible flood.
“In fact, PDP had to cancel the organisation of the Chinese New Year Open House 2025 and house-to-house visits, focusing all available resources on post-flood reconstruction and relief efforts to help the victims recover as quickly as possible.
“However, I believe that with the collective strength of our community, Bintulu will rise again from this challenge, come back stronger, and enjoy a prosperous life as before,” Tiong said. – DayakDaily
