MIRI, March 14: Lucrative prizes await winners of two competitions organised by Miri City Council (MCC) in conjunction with Miri City’s 14th anniversary on May 20.

‘Discover Uniquely Miri’ is divided into two sections — essay writing and photography — and they are open to everyone, including foreigners.

“The contest aims to promote Miri’s tourism sector,” said Mayor Adam Yii today during a press conference to announce the contests.

The essay competition is divided into three categories by language, namely English, Malay and Chinese. The deadline for submission is April 7.

“Entries must be of 3,500 to 7,000 words in length. It is open to everyone who wants to share their experience travelling to tourist attractions in Miri, including Mulu, Niah and Marudi,” Yii explained.

Entries will be judged by Persatuan Penulis Utara Sarawak (PUTERA), Chinese Writers Association Miri and Society of English Writers Northern Zone.

The prizes are as follows: first prize is RM1,500 cash, second prize (RM1,000), third prize (RM500) and five consolation prizes (RM150).

The photography competition is divided into five categories: human interest (culture and tradition), scenery, event, food, and nature.

Each entry must be in a set of five photographs and the deadline for submission of entries is April 30.

The prizes are as follows: first prize is RM2,000 cash, second prize (RM1,500), third prize (1,000) and five consolation prizes (RM200).
