KUCHING, Jan 13: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for several parts of Sarawak, with thunderstorms, heavy rain, and strong winds expected until 5pm today.
In a statement issued at 1pm, MetMalaysia said the areas in Sarawak affected by the warning are Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sri Aman (Sri Aman), Betong, Sarikei (Sarikei and Meradong), Sibu (Sibu and Selangau), Mukah, and Bintulu.
MetMalaysia explained that a thunderstorm warning is issued when there are indications of thunderstorms producing rainfall intensity exceeding 20 millimetres per hour that are imminent or expected to persist for more than one hour.
The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, valid for a period of no more than six hours for each issuance.
Members of the public in the affected areas are advised to remain vigilant, take necessary safety precautions and monitor official updates from MetMalaysia as weather conditions may change. — DayakDaily
