KUCHING, Dec 25: Just in time for Christmas Day, the festive lights on 48 trees along Jalan La Promenade are glowing brightly once more, thanks to the tireless efforts of Hock Seng Lee’s (HSL) building and events team, who sprang into action to repair damage caused by thieves late Monday night (Dec 22).
All lights are now fully restored, ensuring visitors can enjoy the holiday magic.
The outage occurred when the main electrical cables powering HSL Christmas Street trees were cut and stolen, disrupting the festive decorations.
HSL’s security personnel detected the power loss at around midnight and subsequently discovered that the main wiring for the Christmas installations had been deliberately cut and removed.
Despite the setback, the team worked quickly to restore the lights, which are part of HSL’s annual La Promenade Christmas Street, a celebration that kicks off with a lighting ceremony and has become one of the area’s most-loved year-end traditions. The tradition began in 2021 and has grown in scale and imagination ever since.
According to HSL in a statement late Wednesday (Dec 24), about 10 team members spend three weeks installing the decorations, and this year they lit 48 of the 1,400 pine trees along La Promenade.
As the trees grow taller and wider, the task becomes increasingly challenging, but the team’s dedication never wavers.
“The Christmas décor cost HSL roughly RM60,000 to purchase, but honestly, what makes it special isn’t the money—it’s the effort behind it.
“Big thanks to: Clinton, Rickfield, Charles, Gary, Philibert, Akbar, Bunawar, Ardi, Rahman, Khoerudin and Kak Maria. They work through sun and rain, and even after the lights come on, they’re still doing maintenance,” HSL said.
Equally deserving of praise is HSL’s security team, led by John, who manages traffic and ensures smooth movement for thousands of visitors each day.
This year’s prompt restoration is a testament to the behind-the-scenes teams who worked tirelessly to overcome theft and technical setbacks, keeping the holiday spirit alive and making La Promenade a truly magical place for all to enjoy. — DayakDaily
