KUCHING, Oct 10: Proposed investments of up to RM1 billion by Thai and Japanese groups could strengthen Sarawak’s push to develop higher-value petrochemical production, potentially creating new requirements for technical expertise and industrial services.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the interest emerged from meetings with representatives of the two investor groups during his visit to Bangkok, Thailand, last month.

“These investors recognise Sarawak’s strengths in low-carbon energy and the state’s oil and gas resources, and they are very keen to invest up to RM1 billion to produce petrochemical products,” he said.

He said this at the parade held in conjunction with the celebration of the 80th birthday of the Sarawak Governor (TYT) Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Padang Merdeka here today.

The proposed investments could support the development of Sarawak’s downstream industry, while creating potential opportunities for local companies providing engineering, maintenance, logistics, manufacturing technology and professional services.

Abang Johari stressed that foreign investments should be linked to local businesses to ensure their benefits extend to the wider State economy, including through business opportunities and higher household incomes.

“Investments flowing into Sarawak must be linked with local companies in engineering, maintenance, logistics, manufacturing technology and professional services to generate the local economy,” he said.

He also revealed that SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son and representatives of the global technology company had held discussions in Sarawak earlier, reflecting international interest in the State’s economic potential. —DayakDaily
