MIRI, Sept 14: Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau has urgently called for immediate measures to restore power in Kampung Long Tap in interior Baram, after a fire destroyed the village’s solar station, leaving 640 residents without electricity since Wednesday (Sept 11).

Dennis has notified Sarawak Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi about the situation and discussed potential solutions, including deploying temporary generator sets to provide electricity to the affected villagers.

“I trust that the Ministry, through Sarawak Energy, will expedite the rebuilding of the solar system. However, it will take some time due to the necessary processes involved,” he said when contacted today.

Firefighters and villagers working to break the lock to access the solar system unit which has been destroyed by fire in Kampung Long Tap, Baram.

With the year-end festive season approaching, Dennis emphasised the urgent need for power and stressed that finding a temporary solution is crucial.

Julaihi informed Dennis this morning that the Ministry is addressing the issue with urgency, though no immediate timeline has been provided.

The fire, which occurred on Sept 11 around 12.45pm, completely destroyed the village’s solar power station, including batteries and equipment housed in a temporary building.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Marudi, with assistance from the Miri Zone Fire Investigation Division, is currently investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the total damage. — DayakDaily
