KUCHING, July 26: Tchee Foh Hin, whose son Kian Jong was killed in the CityOne Megamall explosion last December, will finally get to live in a new, comfortable home.

The 67-year-old, who needed a wheelchair to move around, has been living in a dilapidated hut built on a piece of land that was not his. Worst, the late son was the sole breadwinner of the family.

However, thanks to the joint effort between the state government, Democratic Action Party (DAP) leaders, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), as well as some concerned members of the public, Tchee’s new home is now nearing completion.

State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, who handed over the keys of the new house to Tchee today, expressed gratitude to the efforts of all parties involved in the building of the house.

“Construction began in February. On top of our allocation, Bomba also helped with the site clearing, while several contractors donated some building materials.

“So its a joint effort by the Bomba, the private sector, MPs allocation and some kind-hearted people who donated cash.

“Also, I would like to thank the state government for allocating this land on which we can build the house for him (Tchee). It’s a joint effort coming together,” the Stampin MP said at the presentation ceremony.

State Bomba director Khirudin Drahman also praised the efforts of DAP leaders and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak government in helping Tchee without gunning for political mileage or favours.

“This is the best example to show what Sarawakians are like, helping each other regardless of their creed and political views.

“This is not the first and won’t be the last. With this approach by the various parties chipping in to lend a hand, we Bomba will always move forward to help those in need as best we can,” he said.

Khirudin said such spirit had allowed various parties including philanthropists, DAP, the state government and Bomba to feel compassionate for the elderly man and provided a helping hand. — DayakDaily
