KUCHING, July 7: Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang encourages Sarawakians to spend time with friends and family on July 22 to celebrate Sarawak’s 59th Independence Day, so future generations will continue observing the special day.
In a Sarawak Independence Day message, he also urged Sarawakians not to forget three important dates: Aug 31, 1957, July 22, 1963, and Sept 16, 1963.
“On Aug 31, 1957, the States of Malaya achieved independence from the British.
“On July 22, 1963, Sarawak achieved independence from the British.
“On Sept 16, 1963, the four regions of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak united to form the nation of Malaysia. However, on Aug 9, 1965, Singapore was separated from Malaysia and became its own country,” he explained.
He stated that the world is facing uncertainty in almost every aspect following the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Our region of Sarawak has a vision that by 2030, we will become a developed region in Malaysia. However, due to the global pandemic, we may not reach this goal.
“Therefore, the Sarawak government has come up with initiatives, namely the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).
“Under the PCDS 2030, I have confidence that we can be a developed region by 2030,” the Tamin assemblyman asserted.
Christopher also wished all Sarawakians a Happy Sarawak Independence Day, emphasising the importance of instilling a sense of belonging to Sarawak in order to maintain harmony and unity among Sarawakians, as well as the importance of protecting and safeguarding Sarawak’s interests. — DayakDaily
