KUCHING, Sept 22: Phase 2 of the Tambirat Waterfront is set to move into the tendering stage, with the project expected to cost more than RM100 million
Speaking at a press conference after chairing the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Authority (IRSDA) Steering Committee Meeting here today, its chairman Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Phase 2 will cover roughly one kilometre along Kampung Tambirat before moving into the tendering or contractor selection stage.
“We discussed Phase 2 today, where the waterfront will cover the whole of Kampung Tambirat. It will be about one kilometre, and we want it to be something that the people of Kampung Tambirat will be very proud of,” he said.
Abdul Karim, who is also the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Asajaya assemblyman, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had agreed for Phase 2 to be implemented.
“So it will be tendered or we will identify who will undertake the project in the future. The cost is also quite substantial. It is definitely more than RM100 million,” he said.
On Phase 1 of the Tambirat Waterfront, Abdul Karim said part of the project had collapsed about four to five months before its scheduled completion in 2024.
He said the project, with a ceiling of about RM26 million, had initially been planned for completion in time for its official opening in conjunction with the Samarahan Regatta that year. However, part of the structure collapsed before the project could be completed.
Abdul Karim noted that while the matter has entered legal proceedings, efforts are still required to salvage the affected Phase 1 project.
The Tambirat Waterfront is among development projects implemented within the IRSDA area, which covers the Samarahan region. — DayakDaily
