KUCHING, July 17: Seven out of 15 upgrading works under the RM120 million-flood mitigation project for Taman Desa Wira in the Batu Kawah constituency, approved by the Sarawak government, have been implemented since last year.

Minister for Local Government and Housing Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian emphasised that the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) has vowed to speed up the construction works at Desa Wira Lorong 17 and 17A which were affected due to Movement Control Order (MCO) restrictions.

“Taman Desa Wira’s drainage system upgrade and improvement is a massive project.

“DID will upgrade all the existing main drains to Sungai Moyan in the first phase, followed by repairing and upgrading of residential drains to ensure smoother running of water into drains.

“Low lying areas will be raised and all drains at the residential areas will be converted to concrete drains with the width of the main and sub-drains at 1.5m and 1.2m respectively,” he explained in a statement today after being briefed by DID Sarawak director Datu Chok Moi Soon on the progress of the project.

All works, he added, had been awarded through open tender processes.

Under the flood mitigation project, the comprehensive plan will cover seven flood affected areas namely Jalan Batu Kawa Lorong 1c and 3, Sungai Moyan, Sungai Surih, Jalan Field Force, Jalan Ketitir, RPR areas and Kampung Sina Budi Baru.

Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman, pointed out  that the flooding issue in Desa Wira was due to the current poor drainage system but they could be resolved with targeted upgrading works in certain lanes and areas as all the drains in the areas were interconnected.

“So Taman Desa Wira residents don’t have to worry because no areas would be left behind in this flood mitigation project,” he reassured the residents.
