KUCHING, Feb 20: The cause of the recent flash flood which hit Taman Batu 9½, Jalan Penrissen here falls under the responsibility of the Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID), says Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Dato Peter Minos.

He explained that if the flood water flows from the river, that is under the responsibility of DID, while floods caused by drainage problems in a housing estate falls under the responsibility of local councils including MPKS.

“Nevertheless, MPKS will still help to inform the DID about flood disasters that occur in any residential area.

“In this regard, many people misunderstood and point the finger at MPKS if there is a flood caused by overflowing river water,” he told DayakDaily.

Minos responded to a resident’s complaint, Homery Sylvester Pungga, 42, who called on MPKS to address the water woes in the area.

Homery described the recent flooding on Feb 16 as the worst he had experienced, with water inundating his house up to the living room, despite the drainage system upgrades in the area.

“Every year, the flood water only enters the kitchen area. This is what I expected when I woke up in the morning.

“But this time, the living room of the house was also flooded. This is the worst flood I have ever experienced,” he said.

Homery, who has been residing in the area for 30 years, never expected that the flood water would rise to the extent of entering his living room especially when the drainage system in the area has been upgraded.

“Residents of Taman Batu 9½ have made several complaints to MPKS regarding the frequent flooding problem.

“Therefore, we hope that MPKS would pay serious attention to this issue and resolve it as soon as possible,” he added. — DayakDaily
