SIBU, Sept 1: Politicians and public servants should prioritise active listening and understanding while reducing excessive speech and take meaningful actions instead.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan chairman Robert Lau called on all members to adopt a more reserved approach to speech so that they can dedicate more time to genuinely understand the concerns, needs and aspirations of the people they represent.
“This emphathetic understanding serves as the foundation for creating effective policies or action plans could that benefit the people.
“Those who serve the public who consistently engage in grandiloquent speeches often leave little room for meaningful conversations with their constituents,” he said during a unity cruise with party members yesterday (Aug 31).
Pointing out that Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun who prioritises actions over words is well-received by people from all walks of life, Lau emphasised that this is the path SUPP Bawang Assan members must follow.
He continued by stating that politicians who prioritise action over empty rhetoric tend to earn greater trust and credibility from their constituents.
“When politicans constantly follow through on their promises, their constituents develop a sense of respect and trust in their leadership.
“Trust is essential for maintaining a stable and productive political environment, allowing for more collaborative efforts between politicians and citizens,” he said.
However, Lau cautioned that politicians promising too much without delivering would erode public confidence and fuel cynicism.
Meanwhile, the unity cruise brought together more than 100 SUPP members from Sibu’s five branches – Bawang Assan, Bukit Assek, Dudong, Nangka and Pelawan in the four-hour boat ride.
