KUCHING, March 31: Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has described women as the foundation of the state’s development, as they play crucial roles in every layer of society, be it in a family, organisation, politics or administration.

Women, he added, also help the men to play a more effective role in the development of the state.

“Women help bring development to society in terms of education and many others, which will bring changes to the society in time to come,” Taib said during Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia (Perkim) Sarawak’s 30th Anniversary Dinner here on Saturday.

Taib urged the 4,828 Perkim Sarawak members, which consist of Muslim womenfolk from all over the state, to keep up their good work in Perkim to help prepare society with new trends that would bring about development while continuing to respect communities of other faiths.

He announced a contribution of RM100,000 to Perkim Sarawak to encourage its members to continue helping the needy while bringing about development to the state.

Earlier, Perkim Sarawak chairwoman Dato Hanifah Taib-Alsree highlighted the work by Perkim Sarawak, which involved charity, welfare, community, education and preaching the good word of Islam.

“Perkim Sarawak will continue to carry out these charity activities so that its members will always have the latest information and knowledge.

“We would also like to record our appreciation to those who have helped us by giving unconditional donations and contributions for the well-being of the deserving people we are helping,” she said.

Also present at the gathering were Taib’s wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife, Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang. — DayakDaily
