KUCHING, May 12: Residents of Kampung Punan Bah in the Belaga district are now facing the high possibility of their hanging bridge getting washed away by strong currents as the river swells due to incessant rain which is affecting low-lying areas.

Sarawak Rivers Board officer-in-charge for Bakun area, Nicol Agoi revealed his officers and district Disaster Management Relief Committee personnel were currently monitoring the situation closely.

“We are monitoring the situation in Belaga, particularly Kampung Punan Bah. So far, no houses have been affected by the flood.

Houses near a riverbank are threatened by flood as the river water level climbs at Kamung Punan Bah, Belaga.

“But what we are worried about is the hanging bridge connecting residents at Kampung Punan Bah. Now some residents are racing against time to clear the debris which has gotten stuck on the hanging bridge,” Nicol told DayakDaily when contacted today.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Belaga assemblyman Datuk Liwan Lagang said, he has communicated with the Belaga district officer to monitor the situation on the ground.

“If weather permits, I plan to fly over to Belaga tomorrow to assess the situation,” he said. — DayakDaily
