KUCHING, Dec 29: A fire that broke out at Pasar Tamu Simpang Bekenu in the early hours of this morning was swiftly brought under control by members of the public, preventing it from spreading further.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) received an emergency call at 12.19am today, reporting flames at the popular local market.
Firefighters from the Batu Niah firestation arrived at the scene at 1am and confirmed that the fire had already been successfully extinguished by members of the public, who used water from nearby sources to contain the blaze.

The fire involved merchandise, electrical appliances and wiring, affecting about 20 per cent of the market area, covering an estimated 30 by 20 square feet.
No injuries or casualties were reported.
As the flames had already been put out, Bomba personnel did not carry out active firefighting operations. Instead, the team conducted thorough inspections and continuous monitoring to ensure there were no remaining hotspots or sources of re-ignition.
Once the area was confirmed safe, operations concluded at 1.50am, and the team returned to the station.
The cause of the fire and the estimated losses are still under investigation. – DayakDaily
