KUCHING, Jan 27: A fire that broke out at the acid pond of Palmcoll Oil Mill along Jalan SK Sungai Anak in Tatau was swiftly brought under control by the mill’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) before firefighters arrived, preventing the incident from escalating.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said it received a call at 4.53pm reporting the incident, but the caller later informed the Selangau control room that the fire had already been extinguished.
Following the report, a team from the Tatau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP Tatau) was dispatched to the site, about 40km away, to carry out monitoring and ensure the situation was fully safe. The area falls under BBP Tatau’s jurisdiction.
According to Bomba, the mill’s ERT acted promptly by deploying 70 units of dry powder fire extinguishers and laying three 100-metre hose lines from three nearby fire hydrants to put out the flames.
No casualties were reported.
The operation was led by PBK I Boniface Empaya and involved six personnel with one Fire Rescue Tender (FRT). No other agencies were involved.
The incident was classified as a factory fire involving an acid pond at a palm oil mill. — DayakDaily
