KUCHING, Oct 27: Sarawak’s plan to construct a new Kuching International Airport has attracted investors, says Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Abang Johari said that, as one of the strategic infrastructures, the new airport will be modelled based on airports in Abu Dhabi and Doha, which will utilise the latest technology to provide seamless experiences for travellers.

“This will enable the traveller’s check-in and check-out process to take only one step, like the word that I have always said, ‘Ketek aja, jalan’ (just tap, walk). This will be convenient for visitors to travel into Sarawak,” he said during the closing ceremony of the Urban Development Authority (UDA) Carnival 2024 here today.

According to Abang Johari, the new airport will also be able to accommodate 15 million travellers into Sarawak, which will help boost the local economy.

He also explained that the reason for that approach is to cater to the market of over three billion people in the ASEAN region, including India, China, South Korea, and Japan.

“They can come to Sarawak within only five hours using our airline services. They should come here because Sarawak has natural attractions. For example, Kuching is a geo-park area. We also have the Niah and Mulu Caves and many others.

“That is the reason why we took over MASwings; we must have our own airline company,” he added. — DayakDaily
