KUCHING, May 11: Sarawak’s gross domestic product (GDP) per capita has increased from RM55,931 in 2020 to RM65,971 in 2021, surpassing the national GDP per capita, which is currently at RM47,439, according to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

This was stated by Abang Johari during his speech prior to officiating at the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) Borneo Symposium 2023, which was held today at the Borneo Cultures Museum here.

“I am optimistic that we are on the right track. Our GDP per capita has increased from RM55,931 in 2020 to RM65,971 in 2021 is one important indicator.

“This number has surpassed the national GDP per capita which is currently at RM47,439.

“Through various science and technology related projects and initiatives introduced by my administration, it will have a significant impact on the region which will eventually improve the livelihood of the people,” he said.

He stated that Sarawak intends to double the its GDP from RM136 billion in 2019 to RM282 billion in 2030, while also creating an additional 195,000 job opportunities.

“The task now is to ensure the state’s annual growth rate is at least 8 per cent over the next seven years, which will be a quantum leap from the current growth rate of around 3 per cent to 4 per cent, he added.

“We only have one option to achieve this. We must transform the state into an innovative, tech-driven economy.”

Among others present at the event were Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) chairman Tan Sri Morshidi Abdul Ghani and MBOT president Datuk Ir Ts Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir. — DayakDaily
