KUCHING, June 15: With 71 Totally Protected Areas (TPAs), Sarawak has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts towards its target of gazetting up to one million hectares of conservation areas under Sarawak’s biodiversity conservation policy, as well as creating greater opportunities for the development of ecotourism products.
According to Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran, many national park areas still hold potential to be developed into new tourism attractions but have yet to be fully explored due to accessibility and infrastructure constraints.
“For example, there are many national park areas that remain unexplored despite being gazetted because of accessibility limitations such as the absence of roads and supporting infrastructure,” he said at the SFC Excellent Service Award (APC) 2025 ceremony here today, as reported by TVS.
He said the extensive infrastructure development currently taking place across Sarawak, including road and bridge networks, is expected to serve as a key catalyst for the growth of the State’s ecotourism sector, which could facilitate efforts to upgrade existing facilities and unlock the tourism potential of national parks that were previously difficult to reach.
“Development in Sarawak now places greater emphasis on accessibility. With infrastructure such as roads and bridges, it will be easier to develop the ecotourism sector in the State,” he explained.
He added that SFC expects more new ecotourism products to be developed in the future through the gazettement of additional TPAs, which include the Three Sisters Waterfall area in Baram and several other national park locations. — DayakDaily
