KUCHING, Aug 13: Imran Azim Iskandar, a talented violinist from Sibu, brought pride to the State and country as he recently achieved a remarkable feat by winning a gold medal in the classical music genre at the prestigious World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) held in Anaheim, United States.
According to a news report by TVS, the 17-year-old musician also won two silver and two bronze medals.
Silver was won in the contemporary and original work categories, while bronze was won in the jazz and open genres.
Imran expressed satisfaction with his accomplishments in the prestigious competition. However, he also acknowledged that certain areas required improvement for future competitions.
He stated that he would try to enhance performance in the future, focusing on the technical aspect.
Meanwhile, Elwyn Jung, another Sarawakian from Kuching, also made the State and the country proud by winning medals in all of the dance events he competed in.
Elwyn achieved silver medals in the contemporary, jazz, and ethnic dance categories and won bronze medals in the lyrical, musical theatre, and open genres, where he showcased his ballet \skills.
Elwyn found the performance in the contemporary genre to be the most challenging. This was mainly because it was his final event after performing five other dances.
“Despite feeling tired, I still gave my best,” he said, as quoted.
He expressed that what matters to him is that this competition provides an opportunity for friendship with and learning from participants from different countries, including the Philippines, Belgium, Germany, France, Indonesia, and more.
Elwyn is determined to participate in the competition’s next edition and has set his sights on winning gold.
On Aug 20, these two artists are scheduled to return to their homeland.
The annual WCOPA is commonly referred to as the ‘Talent Olympics’. This year, the competition attracted participants from 72 different countries. The competition took place from July 22 to 30. — DayakDaily
