KUCHING, Aug 14: The Sarawak government, through the Sarawak Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Salcra), is setting up an oil palm kernel crushing plant to produce livestock feed as an alternative resource.
Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU) said this adding that the project is expected to commence in early 2026.
“Once completed, the plant is expected to produce 100,000 metric tonnes of animal feed annually,” said EPU in a written reply to Agro Machtigen Sdn Bhd technical project lead Alvin Amos Adrian Susin.
During the recently held Sunday Morning with Premier 2.0: Dialogue Session with Young Entrepreneurs on New Economy, Alvin had asked whether the Sarawak government intends to subsidise animal feeds, especially for livestock farmers, given the ever-increasing animal feed price.
To this question, EPU replied, saying that the Sarawak government currently has no plan to provide subsidies.
“However, the government is planning to develop an animal feed industry by using local resources, mainly oil palm and sago by-products,” it added.
Meanwhile, EPU noted that the federal government provided subsidies for chicken breeders and chicken egg producers through the Putrajaya Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).
As of December 2022, RM37.8 million in subsidies were paid to 104 poultry meat breeders and 97 table eggs breeders. — DayakDaily
