KUCHING, Dec 9: Sarawak is targeting full integration of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) by 2030 for projects valued above RM10 million for buildings and RM100 million for infrastructure to streamline the construction process and tackle delays in public projects.
Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas today highlighted that BIM would be key in improving efficiency and ensuring timely delivery of State projects.
The technology, which enhances collaboration among stakeholders and reduces costly errors, is seen as a critical tool for addressing inefficiencies and project delays.
During his address at the inaugural JKR Sarawak BIM Day, Uggah who is also Deputy Premier, noted that in 2024, four projects were terminated and eleven critically delayed, stressing the need for improvement as the government has RM1.3 billion worth of projects planned for 2025.
“There are four terminated projects and eleven critically delayed projects. Two projects are State funds. (The) JKR Team and MIPD need to study the root cause contributing to project delays,” said Uggah.
Uggah urged the Public Works Department (JKR) to address the root causes of delays and ensure that all future projects are completed on time, within budget, and with the required quality and safety standards.
By incorporating detailed information about building components, maintenance schedules, and lifecycle costs, BIM can support the operation and maintenance of government-owned infrastructure, ensuring proactive maintenance, minimising downtime, and optimising resource allocation—essential for sustaining and improving public assets in the long term. — DayakDaily
