S’wak Premier honoured with top Asean Leadership Award for outstanding contributions to region

KUCHING, Aug 16: Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg once again earned recognition on the Southeast Asia stage by receiving ‘The Great Asean Distinguished Leadership Excellence Award’ at a prestigious hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (Aug 15).

In a news report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the esteemed award by the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific and the Asean Economic Club was presented to Abang Johari by the Institute’s chairman Tan Sri Majid Khan, and president Tan Sri Michael Yeoh.

The event was a night of historic and special moments, celebrating and honoring extraordinary individuals from the Asean region who have significantly contributed to regional economic growth and prosperity.

In his speech, Abang Johari expressed deep gratitude for the honour and acknowledged the privilege of being among such distinguished individuals. He highlighted that the Sarawak government is committed to transforming the region’s economy through renewable energy initiatives.

“I believe that renewable energy is a crucial foundation for any economic activity. Sarawak has long been recognised for its abundant renewable energy resources, and we are committed to developing 10 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy, including through hydro and gas turbines, by 2030.”

The ceremony also recognised 18 outstanding entrepreneurs across various categories, celebrating their significant achievements and contributions to corporate social responsibility (CSR).

This award honours individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, made significant contributions in their fields, and had a positive impact on their communities or industries. The criteria include proven leadership, a track record of success, contributions to the Asean community, and a commitment to sustainable development.
