KUCHING, Aug 28: The Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MYSED) is ready to support Sarawakian boxer ‘Kilat Boy’ Daeloniel McDelon Bong to participate in a boxing event to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates around October this year.
Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said, however, the ministry would also consider the views and advice of the relevant coaches and associations regarding this matter.
“This is because an athlete is qualified for many events in a whole year, and at the same time, an athlete’s performance has its ups and downs.
“If an athlete chooses to participate in too many events consecutively, it might not be suitable for them.
“Thus, we will wait for the coach or association’s input; if they say ‘please send him’ (sic), we will definitely send him,” he said at a press conference at Baitulmakmur II today.
Last Saturday (Aug 26), Daeloniel emerged as champion at the second edition of the Sarawak Open Boxing Championship 2023 in Sri Aman.
According to a report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), the 24-year-old Sri Aman-born athlete defeated Indonesia’s Oky Akhbar with a score of 180:159 in six rounds for the featherweight (57kg) category.
The victory qualifies him to participate in the upcoming boxing championship, which is expected to take place in Dubai soon.
However, Daeloniel has reportedly said that he has yet to confirm his participation in the Dubai championship due to financial restraints. — DayakDaily
