KUCHING, July 25: The Sarawak Transport Ministry (MOTS) and Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) have reached an agreement to ensure that the Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASwings Sdn Bhd proceeds smoothly and without disrupting the operation of rural air services (RAS).
According to a MOTS press release, MOTS Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, along with a Sarawak delegation, met with MAG in Petaling Jaya yesterday to brief and discuss the Sarawak government’s acquisition of MASWings.
“The primary objective of the meeting was to brief and kick off the discussions with MAG regarding the acquisition of MASWings Sdn Bhd by the Sarawak government as a follow-up from the meeting with the main shareholder of MAG, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, on July 7th, 2023, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the acquisition of RAS between the Sarawak government and the Federal government on July 20.
“During the fruitful meeting, both parties reached an agreement to ensure a smooth acquisition process without disrupting the operation of RAS.
“Lee also highlighted that through the MOU signing with the Federal government on July 20, the Federal government has assured that the RAS subsidy by the Federal government will continue to serve RAS and promote socio-economic activities in rural areas.”
MOTS stated that it had also been decided that a second MOU would be signed with MAG in order to initiate further discussions and pave the way for a seamless takeover.
The ministry explained that through the comprehensive MOU, both parties can initiate in-depth discussions, establish clear parameters, define the scopes, establish timelines, and ensure a streamlined acquisition process for MASWings.
“Lastly, YB Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin expressed his heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the Malaysia Aviation Group for its support and collaboration with the Sarawak government.” — DayakDaily
