KUCHING, Oct 13: Sarawak’s active participation in the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) has reinforced its role as a forward-looking legislative body engaging in global dialogue on democracy, technology, and climate change.
According to the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS), the conference, held in Bridgetown, Barbados, from Oct 5 to 12, brought together more than 500 parliamentarians and parliamentary staff from across the Commonwealth under the theme ‘The Commonwealth: A Global Partner’.
The event provided a platform for lawmakers to address shared global challenges, including strengthening parliamentary institutions, harnessing technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in governance, and tackling the effects of climate change on global health.
Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) Speaker, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, head of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Sarawak Branch, who led the delegation, expressed gratitude that they were able to attend the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference CPC and CPA General Assembly to represent Sarawak.
“The CPA’s annual conference offers the opportunity for members to benefit from professional development, supportive learning, and the sharing of best practice with colleagues from Commonwealth Parliaments together with the participation of leading international organisations,” he said.
Also representing the Sarawak branch were Lingga assemblywoman, Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor, and DUS secretary, Nur Azhar Bujang.
Dayang Noorazah participated in the sessions of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP), a dedicated network focusing on gender equality and women’s representation, while Nur Azhar attended the 59th Society of Clerks-at-the-Table (SOCATT) meetings, which facilitate the exchange of experience and knowledge among parliamentary clerks.
The main conference was held in conjunction with several other key meetings, including the 41st CPA Small Branches Conference, the 9th Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians (CWP) Conference, meetings of the Commonwealth Parliamentarians with Disabilities (CPwD) network, the 2025 CPA General Assembly, and the 59th SOCATT meetings.
Elections for several CPA positions, including the CWP and CPwD Chairpersons, CPA Treasurer, and CPA Vice-Chairperson, also took place.
Furthermore, a CPA Regional (Southeast Asia) Meeting, co-chaired by Malaysia and Singapore, was held on the sidelines. The meeting allowed parliamentary delegations from the region to discuss shared priorities and reinforce regional cooperation within the broader CPA framework. — DayakDaily
