KUCHING, Aug 29: The Sarawak government welcomes any airlines that want to add or open new routes from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, and Medan to here.
According to a TVS news report, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this was discussed following his recent visit to Indonesia.
He said if these routes were to materialise, they could act as feeder flights (flights that carry passengers to a transfer point to take a connecting flight if the flights are under the same contract of carriage) for the Borneo Umrah Hub departing from Kuching which is scheduled to start next month.
“We are working with our Indonesian counterparts to try and improve bilateral tourism promotion.
“(On behalf of the Sarawak government), we also hope that Malaysia Airlines will offer the same route,” he was quoted as saying during a press conference on August 28.
The TVS news report stated that currently, only AirAsia offers direct flights from Jakarta to Kuching, while the Kuching-Pontianak route that was stopped during the Covid-19 pandemic is still in the process of being reactivated. — DayakDaily
