MIRI, Sept 3: The fishing community of Kampung Kuala Sibuti is set to witness a transformative development as the Sarawak government has approved an RM18 million fishing jetty project.

This initiative aims to serve as a socio-economic catalyst, bringing significant benefits to the local residents.

In a follow-up visit to the project site at Kuala Sungai Sibuti, various government agencies gathered to assess and discuss the progress of the proposed jetty.

The visit marked the second time officials have surveyed the area, following an initial visit on July 17. This hands-on approach underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that the project meets the needs of the community.

Deputy Minister for Women and Children’s Development, Datuk Rosey Yunus, emphasised the importance of the project, stating that it has the potential to greatly benefit the local fishing community.

“We want this fishing jetty to become a reality, providing crucial infrastructure for the fishermen here.

“This project is not just about constructing a jetty; it’s about creating a facility that will support the livelihood of the entire village,” she added.

Rosey also mentioned that the project has yet to be given an official name, as it was initially referred to as a waterfront construction project. However, she urged the community to focus on the project’s benefits rather than getting caught up in debates over its name.

“The most important thing is for everyone to cooperate so that the project runs smoothly and is fully completed,” she said, adding that the project is still at the tendering stage.

The jetty is expected to serve multiple purposes, including as a docking area for fishermen’s boats and a place for them to unload their catch.

Additionally, the jetty will feature a pedestrian walkway where visitors may enjoy the natural beauty of the riverbank and beach, watch fishermen return with their haul, and take in the picturesque surroundings.
